Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. was originally organized so that business college students could participate in sorority life.

In February of 1943 a group of women gathered in Detroit, MI at Lewis College of Business to discuss the need for an organization that would support and promote opportunities for young women striving for a better education. These women were full of a desire to do something beneficial and permanent for themselves and to help their communities through social, economical, educational and vocational programs.

They accepted the challenge to find other women who shared the same desire. To meet this need, Elizabeth Garner, an instructor at the college, assisted by her sister, Violet T. Lewis, Lewis College of Business owner and president, founded Gamma Phi Delta Sorority.

There were 26 original signers with 13 of them designated as "Pearls."

Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc has grown to encompass not only business students but now includes undergraduate and graduate students; college graduates; and business and professional women.
